What began as a whimsical painting of clouds slowly evolved into a layered visual midrash—a collection of biblical insights unfolding across multiple canvases. Starting near the base, the first panel features the faint suggestion of a human face, eyes gently closed, looking upward. This image alone was fittingly titled Jacob’s Dream. Above it, another canvas was attached—this time featuring a ladder rendered in an abstract, golden form. Its glowing presence evokes the Kodesh HaKodeshim (the Holy of Holies), subtly alluding to the opinion that Jacob’s dream occurred on Har HaMoriah—the Temple Mount. This interpretation deepens further through the teachings of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, who understood Jacob’s ladder as a metaphor for the soul itself. In his view, each rung represents a stage in the soul’s journey—its trials, ascents, and moments of spiritual growth. Seen in this light, the entire composition becomes more than a dream—it is a map of human elevation. Like Jacob awakening from his vision to discover he was in one of the holiest places in the world, the viewer is invited to awaken to the idea that every struggle may be a rung on a divine ladder. Near the top of the piece, a final panel glows with the subtle image of a golden halo—perhaps a sign of the Shechinah, the Divine Presence, awaiting at the summit. It is the quiet goal of the soul’s journey, shining faintly above it all.
