God created Adam in His image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27)Though Adam was initially one androgynous being, with male and female joined at the back, God later “caused a deep sleep to fall upon man,” separated the feminine side from the masculine side, and formed it into woman. After this primordial uncoupling, an everlasting yearning to reconnect remains between man and woman, along with the hope that they can now meet each other face to face, a level of intimacy greater than unity. In the painting, the simplicity of the black-and-white faces suggests a pure, pristine world. As a deep sleep descends on the man lying on the ground, he sinks into a dark realm of unconsciousness. His hair extends backwards like tendrils rooting themselves in the earth from which he was created. His silvery face turns up to receive the descending rays of life. The feminine side separates and rises from the darkness, becoming her own being. Her face of pearl radiates in the joyful sky tinged with splashes of color.
