The Hidden Sage, explains Raanan, was “painted with my hands with a limited palette of black, white and ochre. I kept destroying the images that were emerging, because I was trying to find a more pure inner expression. At one point, after I had poured puddles of paint onto the canvas, I dipped the sides of my hand into it and found a very interesting mix in the soupy batter. And out of that mix emerged a face. It had a calm presence to which I responded because it was arising from beyond my will or my ego or conscious idea that I had.” I named the result the Hidden Sage because it emerged out of hiddenness.
