Crossing the Red Sea: Rainbow

2002 – 2003

“The pillar of cloud thus moved from in front of them and stood at their rear..It came between the Egyptian and the Israelite camps. There was cloud and darkness that night, blocking out all visibility..Moses extended his hand over the sea. During the entire night, God drove back the sea with a powerful east wind, transforming the sea bed into dry land. The waters were divided..”

Exodus 14:19–21

Shirat Hayam, the song of the sea, is the exuberant hymn of triumph and gratitude (Ex. 15:1–18) sung by 'Moses and the Children of Israel' that describes the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea.

The rainbow was the first Oth Brit, sign of God, in the story of Noah and the flood, where the rainbow appeared as a visual symbol of the covenant, 'between Him and all living creatures for all future generations (Genesis 9:17).' The rainbow is mentioned, again in the prophetic vision of Ezekiel, 'Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the likeness of the Glory of the Lord (Ezekiel 1:28).' Here, the rainbow is conceived as an allegory for the supernatural manifestation of the divine in this world, as was evident again during the splitting of the Red Sea.
