Viridian Heichal Parocheth

1999 – 2004

“Into the space behind this Parocheth, (curtain) you will bring the Ark of Testimony. This Parocheth will thus divide between the Sanctuary and the Holy of Holies.”

Exodus 26:33

The sanctuary (Ex. 26 and 36) was comprised of ten curtains (Parocheth) of violet, purple, and scarlet fabric with inwoven ('embroidered') figures of cherubim; each curtain measured 28 cubits (a cubit is about 1 1/2 feet by 4.) They were joined (i.e., sewn) together, forming two sets of five curtains each. To one edge of each set (on the long side) were attached 50 loops of violet thread, and the other two sets were connected by 50 gold clasps.

In rememberance of the biblical curtains, artists are often called upon to design curtains (Parochet) to adorn the ark where the Torah Scrolls are stored in places of worship.
